A must for tourists to see in the Region is by right its historical and cultural complex of the Solovetsky Archipelago, a UNESCO monument, which comprises about 200 monuments from the 3d Millennium B.C. to the present time. The architectural chef-d’oeuvres scattered about the Region astonish visitors with the harmony of proportions and the beauty of silhouettes; they remind a handful of jewels strewn about – the outstanding fortifications of the Solovetsky Kremlin and the Novodvinsk Fortress; rare in their beauty church complexes of Kargopol, Solvychegodsk, Verkola, Siya; wooden monuments which won the Russian North fame of a summit of wooden architecture. Of archeological monuments the most interesting are Neolithic dwellings, Saami burial places, dolmens and labyrinths in the Solovki; ancient settlements of legendary Chud tribes along the Vel, Pinega, Mosha rivers. A considerable resource of cultural and educational tourism is museum collections and live folk culture of the Pomors.
The renewed Solovetsky Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Our Saviour’s Transfiguration) Stauropegial Cathedral (the 15th century) has been of main interest for tourists and pilgrims; the Cathedral is a grand monument which conceptually was designed to strengthen spiritual and political authority of the largest in the North Cathedral. The Antony-of-Siya Monastery (the 16th century) in the Kholmogorsky District is known as a place of exile of a boyar Fyodor Nikitich Romanov, the founder of the tsarist dynasty and the Moscow Patriarch-to-be, who by force was made to take monastic vows and a name of Filaret by the Tsar Boris Godunov. The Artemy-of-Verkola Monastery (the 17th century) is in the settlement of Verkola of the Pinezhsky District.
In the South-East of the Region, in taiga area, there lies a lake district, which miraculously has preserved the atmosphere of Ancient Rus. It is the «Kenozero National Park», the most interesting and promising secret area for natural and environmental tourism development, for historical research. In Kenozero one can still watch the intricate entity of Christian and ancient pagan traditions.
