The Kotlassky District
The Kotlassky District if situated in the south-east of the Arkhangelsk Region at the confluence of the two big rivers – the Malaya Northern Dvina and the Vychegda. It borders on the Krasnoborsk, Vilegodsky, Lensky, Ustyansky Districts of the Arkhangelsk Region, as well as on the Vologda and Kirov Regions. The area is 6.3 thousand square km, population if 24.4 thousand, its administrative centre is the town of Kotlas, the distance to the Region centre is 590 km.
The Kotlassky District is one of the most unique territories of the Arkhangelsk Region in the number (more than 40) of historical and cultural monuments. The most important monuments of the Russian white stone architecture are in the town-museum of Solvychegodsk – the Vvedensky (the Presentation in the Temple) Cathedral, an acting church with a grand seven-tier iconostasis of the Stroganov’s School of icon painting; the Blagoveshchensky (the Annunciation) Cathedral, a family church of the Stroganovs, the most valuable monument of the Russian stone architecture with the frescoes of the 16th century. Today the church complex houses the Solvychegodsk Museum of History and Arts where the treasured exhibits, the works of the Usolye masters, are being kept. The holy churches of Turovets are also a cultural heritage of the Kotlassky District
The Land of Kotlas is a native place of N.G.Kuznetsov, the USSR Admiral, Z.A. Shishkov, River Fleet Commander, People’s Comissar, E.P. Khabarov, the earliest explorer of Siberia (the 17th century). Hierarch Stefan Velikopermsky, an outstanding Russian reformer S.V. Vitte, a northern athlete V. Shul devoted their lives to the Russian North and entered their names into its history.
Spiritual and historical values, health-improving resources, untrodden areas of virgin lands, unique historical and cultural monuments of older times, traditional generosity, kindness and hospitality of the northern people make a very special potential for developing the territory of the Kotlassky District.
Memory of glorious victories in the times of Intervention, tragedies of the Kotlas concentration camp, battles and hard labour during the Great Patriotic War are alive in the hearts of the Kotlas people and are passed on to the next generations.
Today Kotlas is a large transportation junction and industrial centre, it unites historical and cultural heritage of the neighbouring districts.
Kotlas
The town of Kotlas appeared on the map of Russia on June 3, 1917. Contemporary Kotlas is a town of regional subordination, it is situated 812 km to the south-east of Arkhangelsk (by railway). The total area of the municipality is 6776 hectares, the population is 80 thousand.
Kotlas is the third among the economically important towns of the Arkhangelsk Region. It is a large transportation junction and a river port; it is inhabited by people working in the river transportation, on the railway roads, in machine-building and wood processing industries. The Northern railway road connects Kotlas with Vologda, Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Arkhangelsk, Kirov, Syktyvkar, Vorkuta. Water ways connect it with many districts of the Arkhangelsk and Vologda Regions and the Republic of Komi. Flights to Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Arkhangelsk, Murmansk and districts of the Arkhangelsk Region are carried our from the Kotlas airport.
The Municipalities of Kotlas and the Kotlassky District are active participants of international and inter-regional cooperation. Kotlas has a sister-city Waterville in the USA and Tarnuv in Poland. Agreements on cooperation in tourism are being carried out with the Veliky Ustyug and the Bulgarian town of Gabrovo.
