The Park is a reference system of man’s historical environment, a place where centuries-old history and culture of the Russian North have been preserved. Well kept natural complexes, numerous monuments of material and spiritual culture, architecture, monumental painting, icon painting, archeology, and rich ethnographical material are good illustration of its purpose. In 2004 the Park was entered the world’s network of biosphere preserves and was officially announced the world’s heritage.
Reference information for tourists
To visit the Park one has to buy a voucher (in one of the administrative centres of the Park or at the entrance to it). To preserve the unique nature in the Park its territory is divided into areas of different levels of recreation capacity. Prohibited for visitors areas (zones of particular protection) are usually far from the roads of general purpose and it is impossible to come there by car. The rest of the Park territory requires only to observe the usual regulations of ecological tourism (‘do not harm’ principle), they are listed on information stands in the Park, in booklets and guides.
The Park provides diverse accommodation for tourists from the small hotels in administrative centres in the village of Vershinino (25 places), in the village of Morshchikhinskaya (10 places) to the tourists shelters for 5-10 in the village of Krivtsovo and on the Pochozero shore. Commonly used for accommodation in the ‘private sector’ are the peasants’ houses with the interiors of the end of the 19th - the beginning of the 20th century. There are also a number of sites for rest in tents along the routes in the Park. Longer stays in the tents on the routes, in shelters and hotels, in the private sector should be agreed upon in the Park administrative centres in the village of Vershinino and in the village of Morshchikhinskaya. There one can order an excursion or a guide to accompany tourists along the ecological and tourists’ routes in the Park.
