The Ustyansky District

The Ustyansky District was organized in 1929. Its area is 11.5 thousand square km; it includes 15 village municipalities, 3 workers’ settlements – all in all 233 settlements. The population is 38.9 thousand people. The District centre is a workers’ settlement Oktyabrsky (13 thousand inhabitants). The District is 600 km from Arkhangelsk. The biggest settlements are Oktyabrsky, Loiga, Kizema, Ileza. The main industry is timber-felling, as well as building materials, food and agricultural production.

Ustyany - nature here tries to surpass itself – in a small space it shows all its beauty; uncommon in the North. Light and quiet are the waters of the Ustya River when it runs into the magnificent Vaga among the high hills covered with centuries-old forests or among meadows in bloom or ploughed fields – the tireless Ustyaks toil the soil here and build the jolly villages along the river banks. The untrodden taiga, clear air, medicinal springs, wide meadows, sky so close to the earth have moulded remarkable steady people of good soul. Unique history, preserved traditions, nature generous in its beauty, all these are Ustyany, part of the Povazhye Land, the centre of legendary Zavolochye...

Historical background of the Ustyansky District
Historical information

During the Slavic colonization (the 9th - 15th centuries) the territory of the Ustyansky District of today was in the centre of Zavolochye (the area in the triangle between the Vaga, the Northern Dvina, the Sukhona rivers) which had been explored and inhabited by Chud tribes of Ves, Yem, Zyryan, Udmurt, Merya, Korela. The lands inhabited by Chud Zavolotskaya were first mentioned in the «Povest vremennykh let» (The Story of the Passing Years) by Nestor, the Kiev-Pecherskaya Laura monk-chronicler. The union of tribes under the collective name of Chud, inhabiting the Northern Dvina basin, knew how to make bronze. The evidence of it is Chud decorations made of bronze, splendid items of Middle Age symbolic art: ‘noisy’ pendants (ducks, horses, lambs), horse-shoe fibulas (claps for cloaks), needle containers, beads, etc. For more details...

Today Ustyany is the cleanest place as far as ecology is concerned; it is in the middle of taiga forests, nearby there are no big industrial enterprises with production processes unfriendly to environment. The District area still possesses villages with ancient buildings, original lifestyle, daily routines, cultural traditions, including the well-known tradition of northern hospitality. The Ustya people are famous for their generosity and hospitality; they keep the old secrets of traditional northern cuisine and generously share their skills with their guests. It is the people that are the main value in this wonderful Land For more details...
