The Onega District
The Onega District is situated in the west of the Arkhangelsk Region, on the border of Karelia. It was founded in 1929 when the Northern Krai was divided into districts; its administrative centre is the town of Onega. The area of the District is 24.7 thousand square km. The population is 43 thousand people. The District borders on the Plesetsk and Primorsky Districts.
The administrative centre, the town of Onega, is situated 260 km to the south-west of Arkhangelsk, 7 km from the White Sea shores, in the mouth of the Onega River. The population is 26 thousand people. Communication with the Region centre is by railway and car. For more information...
Onega
Today the ancient Pomor town-port Onega comes to the forefront in the Arkhangelsk Development Corridor Finland – Belomorsk – Arkhangelsk, it plays an important role as a timber industry centre and a large transportation junction in the south-west of the Region. At the same time, geographically Onega is a centre of the unique natural complex which makes the area an attractive tourists’ destination.
Thanks to its rich historical and cultural heritage the town has been included into the Federal Target Programme «Preservation and Development of Architecture in the Historical Towns of the Russian Federation».
