The Plesetsk District
The District was formed in July, 1929 when the Severny Kray was divided into districts; its administrative centre is the settlement at the railway station of Plesetsk.
The District borders on the Nyandoma, Kargopol, Onega, Kholmogory, Vinogradovsky, Shenkursk Districts. Its administrative centre is the workers’ settlement of Plesetsk. The total area of the District is 26.3 thousand square km, the population is 68.4 thousand people. The District has 238 settlements and 11 village administrations on its territory. The distance to Arkhangelsk is 180 km.
Mirny
The town is under the regional authority, it is 5 km from the District centre. It is a closed territorial unit of the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense, a base for the 1st State Test Launch-Site of the Military Space Forces and of the 53d State Test-site for the Strategic Missile Forces.
The cosmodrome occupies an area of 1762 square km on a hilly plateau stretching from north to south for 46 km, from east to west for 82 km. It was founded in 1960 as the first base for intercontinental ballistic missiles MBR R-7 and R-7A (the «Angara» object).
Today the Launch site makes 60 % launches of Russian and 40% foreign space rockets. The core of the «Plesetsk» Launch Site are the missile launchers for «Soyuz U», «Molniya-M», «Kosmos-3M». According to the research programmes satellites are being launched equipped by the USA, Germany, India, Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and other countries to study the Sun, the ozon layer of the Earth, the weather. Communication satellites are also being launched here, their service is at the disposal of each of us.
The Cosmodrome History Museum, the Museum of the Strategic Missile Forces, the Children’s Art School, the «Lesnaya Polyana» Children’s Sanatorium for 200 patients, 3 hotels, Equestrian’s Tourist Club are functioning in the town. For more information...
