It was created in 1991 with the purpose of preserving the largest in Europe massive of virgin taiga forests, the most numerous group of predatory birds in the North-West (bald eagles, golden eagles, and ospreys), and the amount of waterfowl on their migration routes. It is situated on the border of Karelia and the Arkhangelsk Region, its total area is 4047 square km, including 2741 square km in the Arkhangelsk Region. The Taiga forest never touched by man is preserved in the Park.
Peculiar is the flora of the relic forests; some mosses and lichens, tree-fungi and orchids are quite rare. One can watch and study the taiga animals and birds in their natural habitat.
Recreation area for fishermen, equestrian sport and hunting areas and tours have been developed; international environmental, adventure, scientific and educational tourism has been developing rapidly here.
Many monuments of ancient Russian architecture, chapels in action, village houses, and household buildings, have survived.
Accommodation is made possible in the forest service cordons, tourists’ camps and bases, guest houses.
