Religious procession, The Solovetsky Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) Stauropigial Monastery.
Main page » Tourism » Pilgrimage tourism

By the 17th century there were more than 60 monasteries in the Pomor Land, which had become centres of religious and cultural life, safe defenders of the northern borders of the State. Hundreds of talented icon painters, gold-embroiderers, book copiers, jewelers, smiths used to work in the monastery workshops.

An important role in the development of ancient Russian music was played by ‘didaskaly’, singers and composers; especially famous were singers from Usolye, of the Usolye school of singing. The largest collections of hand-written and first printed books were owned by the Solovetsky and the Antoniyevo-Siysky (Antony of Siya) Monasteries.

Among the holy places which used to attract Christian pilgrims were the four active monasteries: the Solovetsky Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) Stauropigial Monastery (the 15th century), the Antoniyevo-Siysky (Antony of Siya) Monastery (the 16th century), Svyato-Artemiyevsky (St. Artemy’s) Monastery of Verkola (the 17th century), Sursky Ioanno-Bogoslovsky (St. John the Theologian’s) Nuns’ Convent (the 19th century), and hundreds of cult buildings, monuments of Russian wooden architecture, many of which are concentrated in the Kenozersky National Park, in the Kargopolsky and Krasnoborsky Districts.

The Solovetsky Church-in-Town

On the Solovetsky Monastery revival, its Church-in-Town was founded anew in its former place, not far from the Northern Dvina River. The Solovetsky Monastery Church-in-Town in Arkhangelsk was established on the blessing of His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II in October 1992. Hieromonach Eleazar (Kondratyev) was appointed the Senior Priest of the Church-in Town.

At present the Senior Priest of the Arkhangelsk Church-in-Town is Hieromonach Stefan (Postolyako).
