The Mezensky District
The Mezensky District is located in the north-east of the Arkhangelsk Region. The Island of Morzhovets is part of it. In the north-east the District borders on the Nenets Autonomous District, in the east – on the Komi Republic, in the south-east on Leshukonsky and Pinega Districts of the Arkhangelsk Region, in the south-west on the Primorsky District of the Arkhangelsk Region. In the north it is washed by the White Sea. The administrative centre of the District is the town of Mezen.
The Mezensky District is the northernmost and largest districts in the Region. The northern point, the Voronov Mys (Voronov Cape), is in the vicinity of Polar Circle. The Island of Morzhovets is situated behind Polar Circle. The District lies east-west for 360 km, the longest distance between the northernmost and the southernmost points is 130 km.
The Mezensky District in its present entity was organized in 1929. The total area is 34.4 thousand square km, the District includes the town of Mezen, the settlement of Kamenka and 52 villages.
The District population is 12.9 thousand people, including 3.8 thousand of the town population, 5.8 thousand people live in the country.
The distance to Moscow from Mezen is 1600 km, to Arkhangelsk from Mezen it is 400 km.
The main industries in the economy are saw-milling and wood processing, milk production and potato and vegetables production, in places reindeer-herding in the forest areas. For more information on the District...
