The transport complex of the Arkhangelsk Region includes all types of transportation: sea, river, railway, aviation and automobile.
The Arkhangelsk transportation junction has been well organized. Historically there have always been the headquarters of the Northern Shipping Company. The sea transportation plays the main role in foreign trade and supplying the coastal areas and islands of the Arctic. The chief cargo ports are Onega, Mezen, Naryan-Mar.
The Arkhangelsk sea port is the first trading port of Russia, a cradle of the Russian ship-building, at present it is the second (after London) world’s port in the length of its berths.
Two railway departments of the Northern Railway exist in the Arkhangelsk Region, the Arkhangelsk Department and the Solvychegodsk Department. The transportation is carried out in the following directions: Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Murmansk, Kirov, Vorkuta. The railway roads’ density is 3 km per 1000 square km.
Automobiles carry out the bulk of home cargo and passenger transportation. The federal highway Arkhangelsk – Moscow (M8) is of great importance for the Regional economy, it enables the automobile transportation follow other Russian roads and the roads of foreign states. The automobile roads’ density is 12 km per 1000 square km.
Rivers provide for inter-regional transportation mainly. The length of exploited river routes is about 4000 km.
Air transportation is mainly passenger and urgent cargo transportation for geologists, as well as forests’ protection. The routes map of the Air Company «Aeroflot – Nord» there are more than 60 cities and towns of Russia, near and far away foreign countries. The Air Company «Aeroflot – Nord» flies with TU-154, AN-154, AN-24, Boeing 737.
