The «Ustyanskaya Ssypchina» Festival of Folklore, Arts and Crafts has become so popular lately; it is a true Forum for artisans. It is held in August, a week before the Honey Spas. Traditionally the Festival starts in the settlement of Oktybrsky with the ‘Ustyansky Karavai’ (Loaf of Bread from Ustyany) celebrations during which people exhibit, buy and taste all kinds of bread and pastry. There is a fair of folk craftsmen’s produce arranged in the central square of the settlement, master-classes are held, and concerts of folklore ensembles are going on in front of the numerous public.

On the following days the festival begins its ‘travel’ across the District, and each village enjoys fairs, traditional cuisine shows, competitions in ‘chastushki’ singing and funny stories telling, master-classes in crafts and arts, and to crown it all the local brand holiday celebrations, such as «Beer-brewing Holiday», «Ldinskaya Kadril», «Hei, See-Saw and Carousel!», ‘Wooden Sculpture Show», «The Best Gates Show», etc.

The Festival finishes in Oktyabrsky again with the final celebrations of the «Honey Spas». In the morning the priests bless honey of a new year brought by local and coming from afar bee-keepers, then follows honey-tasting, honey fair, the District best honey and the best bee-keeper competitions, exhibition of literature to help bee-keeping, master-classes in honey cuisine. In the frames of the celebration there is a scientific conference held, meetings of bee-keepers from all the regions of Russia are arranged.

«Kizema’s Strings» Author’s Songs Festival has also become a good tradition; it is devoted to Yuri Vizbor, who on graduating from the University, came to Kizema School to work as a teacher of the Russian literature and language. Vizbor’s friends, poets and musicians, lovers of «bard’s» songs from Moscow, Arkhangelsk, Severodvinsk, Syktyvkar, Kotlas, Krasnoborsk get together in Ustyany in the settlement of Kizema to participate in the competition called «Let’s Fill Our Hearts With Music». It is for the 4th time that the lovers of author’s songs get around the fire on the bank of the Kizema River at the end of June (the last Saturday and Sunday) when the white nights are at their best to remember the outstanding person – a poet, a musician, an actor and a artist.

To promote the new brand «Ustyany, the Capital of the Northern Honey» the Department of Culture and Tourism has worked out a tourist route «Honey Tour in Ustyany» which acquaints tourists with the Ustyany history, the District bee-keeping history, the variety of bee-keeping produce application, as well as with places of interest and live folk culture of the area. Honey cuisine, master-classes in cooking dishes and drinks with honey, baking with honey, baths with cosmetics made of honey, visits to apiaries, honey tasting and many other events await you while on the tour.

All the year round weddings are arranged for all wishing to celebrate it ‘a la Ustyany’ at the «Malinovka» Tourist Complex; folklore groups participate in the ceremony making it in the best ancient wedding traditions. Baths with honey cosmetics, a cozy cafe with excellent cuisine, a soft bed in a wooden cottage… Unforgettable sweet adventure, a wedding in Malinovka!

It is an educative tourist route with excursions and recreational events in Ustyany; it comprises visiting places of interest, and above all, going to different food production enterprises – meat and milk, bread and pastry, liquors and vodka productions. By the end of the tour each tourist collects a basket - ‘zobenka’ full of tasty things and souvenirs of local artisans to remember a visit to Ustyany.

Joyful Christmastide celebrations for children and grown-ups are held in «Malinovka» and at the «Veryuzhskoye» Guest Base. Visitors are offered winter entertainments: skiing and sledging down the hills, sports relay races, ice fishing, master-classes in cuisine and souvenir making, in painting, folklore singing and other things. Christmas fortune-telling, meeting fairy-tales personages, rest in a warm and cozy house, tea from a samovar with local pies, a New Year Tree round dance, presents and unforgettable impressions, all these are Christmastide in Ustye.

Water route down the Ustya River (rafting, traveling by resin boats, mortised boats) for tourists comprises acquaintance with flora and fauna of the Ustya, visits to memorial places and places of interest, monuments of historical and cultural heritage of the District, meetings with local outstanding people, master-classes in folklore singing, traditional cuisine, baking, souvenir making, plein-air painting, visits to museums, singing by the evening fire. Tourists can have meals with the local people or cooked on the open fire, live in tents or at the sports and tourism bases.

A rest by the most beautiful lake, swimming and boating in summer, skiing and sledging, snow tractors riding in winter is wonderful. Visitors are offered hot baths and massages of ‘veniks’ (birch twigs beating), a rest in a comfortable cottage with a cup of tea from a samovar, master-classes in getting a samovar ready, in ‘venik’ making for bath-houses in summer or ‘venik’ making of bare twigs for removing snow in winter, in fishermen’s or hunters’ cuisine. One can learn much of the history of the Land. Tourists can gather mushrooms and berries, or go hunting or fishing - fishing is always a success here. In the evenings a local song-writer Nikolai Tayezhny will accompany toy to taiga to have a good fire and sing songs.

In river valleys, on water-meadows there grow northern melliferous plants. Since ancient times people of the Usytyany District have been busy bee-keeping. The local apiary produce has been famous in the District and outside. Guests are invited to the apiaries of B.F. Pachin and A.A.Kulakov in the settlement of Stroyevskoye. The educational tour to the apiary will acquaint you with the life cycle of bees, the most sun-loving inhabitants of the Earth, to watch them in the glass bee-hive and then taste the freshest honey followed by a cup of herb tea or a glass of honey beer. Those who wish can buy some honey at the apiary strait from the producer!
