The Pinega local history museum, the settlement of Pinega
THE PINEGA LOCAL HISTORY MUSEUM

The Pinega Local History Museum is in the settlement of Pinega, which used to be an administrative town, a capital of the Pinega Uyezd (district) before the Revolution. The town, in spite of the decades of usual settlement life, has preserved the appearance of a historical town in its central part (the so called Volodinsky Quarter). It is here that the Local History Museum is situated; it houses the collection of items reflecting history and culture of the Land. Started as a school museum it was given the status of a branch of the Arkhangelsk Local History Museum in 1966.

Permanent exhibitions «Life and Daily Pursuits of the Pinega Peasants Before 1917», «Birds and Animals of Our Forests», «The Town of Pinega: 1780-1917», «Political Repressions (1930-1950)», «Churches of the Pinega Land» are being arranged by the Museum, as well as the survey excursion «History of Pinega».

«MARFA’S CRAFTS HOUSE»

In the village of Yorkino there exists a 2-roomed house of crafts opened in 2002 . In the first room there are working places for artisans: looms are always waiting for those who can make wonderful cloth. «Granny’s Chest» contains the ancient men’s and women’s clothes. Those who wish to try them on can do it and for a moment feel themselves in the 17th - 18th centuries. The second room houses a Russian – under the leading of an experienced cook tourists can make rich Russian soup ‘shchi’, porridge or bake ‘shangi’ (scones).

Sursky Ioanno-Bogoslovsky (St. John the Theologian’s) Nuns’ Convent, the Pinezhsky District
SURSKY IOANNO-BOGOSLOVSKY (ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST’S) CONVENT

Sura is the native place of one of the most respected Russian saints, St. John (Ioann) of Kronstadt. His family was poor. His parents, father Ilya Mikhailovich Sergiyev, junior deacon of the local church, and his mother Feodora Vlasiyevna, decided to give their son a religious education, so he had to leave the native land very early. On graduating from Saint-Petersburg Ecclesiastical Academy Father Ioann was appointed a priest to the Andreyevsky Cathedral in the town of Kronstadt. As he had to live far from the native place each time he came to visit the Pinega Land he helped local people with money, treated them for their illnesses showing a great ability to foresee the future. The Krasnogorsky Bogoroditsky (the Mother of God) Monastery, the Pinezhsky District
THE KRASNOGORSKY BOGORODITSKY (THE MOTHER OF GOD) MONASTERY

15 km from the settlement of Pinega there is the Krasnogorsky Bogoroditsky (the Mother of God) Monastery. The place for it was chosen well – it stands on a high hill from which there is a beautiful panoramic view of the river curve, of the river valley along which villages are scattered. Anyone standing on the hill and looking at the Krasnogorsky Monastery environs has a sensation of a flight which is greater in spring when the water flooding the valley reflects the blue sky and makes the space enormously wide. It was not for nothing that the former name of the hill (before the Cloister was built on it) ‘Chernaya’(black) with the time changed for ‘Krasnaya’ (red or beautiful). The Monastery was founded here in 1603.

The Krasnogorsky Monastery acquired much far-fame at the beginning of the 18th century, then it was often visited by Prince Vasily Golitsyn, a favourite of Tsarevna Sofia, who was sent to the Pinega exile by the order of Peter the Great. According to his will he was buried at the Monastery cemetery (the plate from his grave is now exhibited in the Local history Museum).
