 | | THE KRASNOGORSKY BOGORODITSKY (THE MOTHER OF GOD) MONASTERY
15 km from the settlement of Pinega there is the Krasnogorsky Bogoroditsky (the Mother of God) Monastery. The place for it was chosen well – it stands on a high hill from which there is a beautiful panoramic view of the river curve, of the river valley along which villages are scattered. Anyone standing on the hill and looking at the Krasnogorsky Monastery environs has a sensation of a flight which is greater in spring when the water flooding the valley reflects the blue sky and makes the space enormously wide. It was not for nothing that the former name of the hill (before the Cloister was built on it) ‘Chernaya’(black) with the time changed for ‘Krasnaya’ (red or beautiful). The Monastery was founded here in 1603.
The Krasnogorsky Monastery acquired much far-fame at the beginning of the 18th century, then it was often visited by Prince Vasily Golitsyn, a favourite of Tsarevna Sofia, who was sent to the Pinega exile by the order of Peter the Great. According to his will he was buried at the Monastery cemetery (the plate from his grave is now exhibited in the Local history Museum). |
